"Memento Mori" (2001)—An Excerpt from THE CAT'S PAJAMAS: Stories + 5 by Ray Bradbury
The five new stories in THE CAT'S PAJAMAS: Stories + 5 are classic Ray Bradbury tales, with twists, turns, and surprises, filled with the joy that we experience through the simple act of living—and shadowed by the darkness that waits for us just around the corner.
The wake was so large that it adjourned to the Benevolent Order of Elks hall where the two blackbird-ravens-rook ladies glided by with champagne.
Krasnick whispered, "Anyone know them?"
"Haven't the faintest," was the response.
Krasnick moved on. "Who are those strangers pouring champagne?"
"Saw them at Charlie Nutt's grave," someone said. "And Christmas, when we buried Ned."
"God," Krasnick said. "No one knows who in hell they are. Not aunts, nieces, sisters, cousins, mistresses! They're just here!"
