| "Remembrance at Gettysburg" (2003)—An Excerpt from THE CAT'S PAJAMAS: Stories + 5 by Ray Bradbury |
The five new stories in THE CAT'S PAJAMAS: Stories + 5 are classic Ray Bradbury tales, with twists, turns, and surprises, filled with the joy that we experience through the simple act of living—and shadowed by the darkness that waits for us just around the corner.
At the edge of a graveyard meadow, a crowd gathers on a farewell autumn afternoon. This crowd, predominantly men, with a scattering of women and small boys and girls, is dressed in the fine or homely costumes of farmers, merchants, lawyers, and some blue-clothed civil infantry.
Voices speak. And over the heads of the crowd, sixty yards away, men are gathered on a platform where one man speaks, but his voice is lost in the sound of the afternoon wind and the rustle of feet and the uneasy shrugs of coats and vests, and the faint murmur of bees.
